In the South East we run an innovative Children Can
Do programme that invests in community based activities that are
led by children, reacting to their needs whilst engaging
appropriate adult support and supervision.
The Children Can Do programme provides support to new or small
community groups by offering grants, practical support and advice,
information, access to training and networking. We support projects
initiated by children who have greater needs and fewer
chances.
With a commitment and understanding of the importance of early
intervention work with Children and Young People we are working in
partnership with Local Authorities to promote child led activities
within the 8-13 age range. Too often large amounts of funding
within children services departments are being channeled to react
to problems
rather
than preventing them from happening. Evidence proves that promoting
early intervention activities actually saves more money than is
invested. Increasingly all services have got to be justified as it
becomes much harder to fund them over the coming years.
What's special about this programme?
The Children Can Do programme is special because it puts children
and young people at the centre of all the activities undertaken. We
are able to provide the support that Children need as they plan
their own projects and complete an application for funding. We also
provide training and support to a group of children so that they
can feel confident to make informed decisions about how funding
should be prioritised and to what level within their own
communities.

The closing date for the next funding round is 16th May 2012. The children's decision making panel will meet in the June half term to make decisions about which projects are to be funded and to what level. |

What do we need now?
We want to get in touch with local businesses interested in
supporting, in any way you can, children with greater needs and
fewer chances living in Brighton and Hove. If you are interested
then please contact Sue Barnes.
